BRING SOME CHAIRS or let’s sit on the ground
Hansaviertel, Berlin, 2019

Kristina Leko and David Smithson With the participation of residents of the
Hansaviertel

With the participation of residents of the
Hansaviertel

BRING SOME CHAIRS or let's sit on the ground was an artistic intervention in public space on the lawn in front of
Niemeyer Haus in the Hansaviertel in Berlin. The intervention itself was meant
to function as a temporary meeting place for the neighborhood. At the same
time, it was a participatory art project that aimed to create a collective
statement, a manifesto on the topic of communal life and living together in the
city of tomorrow, written together with residents on site. The process unfolded
over three months, but neither a manifesto nor any collectively written text
was accomplished. Instead, the project was concluded by a public reading of a
dozen of individual statements by residents on September 14, 2019.

    Why is
social togetherness and community important, especially today?

The idea of
shaping and enhancing community and communal life through architecture was an
important idea of post-war modernism. This very idea was central to the
reconstruction of the Hansaviertel. Many houses in the Hansaviertel were
originally designed with integrated community spaces; today, only a few still
exist. On-site surveys, supplemented by cultural anthropological research in
the Hansaviertel in 2007, indicate that the idea of community, although failed
in parts, is still a very strong point of reference for many residents. Through
on-site research, the Niemeyer House offers itself as an ideal example of a well-preserved community space and of a functioning community life.
In many other houses, community spaces have been reduced and / or are no longer
being used.

Intervention
in front of the Niemeyer House

In order to
attract the attention of the residents, we first intervened in the public space.
It was an alteration of the ground surface in the open space in front of the
Niemeyer House, where we transferred the floor plans of an apartment and of a
community room of the Niemeyer House. Our intervention site was the lawn, the
green surface which was part publicly and part privately owned. It was a
complex and interesting process to get permits for both surfaces. Interestingly,
we were allowed to intervene much less in the private area than in the public
one.

So, on the
ground’s surface, we traced the floor plan of an apartment and that of a common
area with a 1:1 scale, using marble gravel beds, prefab cement slabs and wooden
lath formwork. In the public area we were allowed to make structural
interventions into the soil up to 10 cm deep, in the private area we were only allowed
to use mesh taping on the surface. The marked outdoor spaces were
developed as a neighborhood meeting point: the intervention attracted
passers-by and invited visitors.

	Community
Workshop

In May
through August 2019, a get-together program took place on the lawn in front of
the Niemeyer House. In conversations as well as in individual interviews, we
questioned the social body and commons: we discussed the good neighborhood
practices, the old and new dynamics between owners and tenants, the old
residents and the newcomers; the architectural tourists, the drinking homeless,
and much more.

On about 16
announced weekend gatherings, as well as in spontaneous meetings, we had brief
exchanges with more than 100 people on the topic of community. Only a few, one
in ten, decided to have a further conversation with us, and to delve into the
question of how we can live better together, locally, but also elsewhere in our
world of today (Interest in community processes, percentage 10%.) In total, we
conducted 14 extensive individual interviews; 11 of them have been authorized
and can be read anonymously on the project website. The other 3 interviews cannot
be read because they were censored by the interviewees themselves on the one
hand and then by me (K.L.) on the other hand, because of their right-wing
extremist contents. (Percentage about 21%.)

Based on
interviews we wanted to write a manifesto together about the good life in the
Hansaviertel and for the community living in the city of tomorrow. In the
process of creating the manifesto 11 people participated, 6 of them more
intensively, but in the end they could not agree on formulations. Thus, instead
of a collectively written text, a text collage of individual statements was put
together. A public reading of these individual statements was the closing event
to the project.

An oral history art
project took place along the Dutch-German border in the localities of Suderwick
in Germany and Dinxperlo in the Nederlands, which had been historically one of
the most conflictual borders of Europe. In
cooperation with seniors’ institutions several encounters and interviews were
organized. The collected stories recounted local border experiences over the
last century and were then edited into collage texts, written down on 9 large panels.
These were positioned in public space in a constellation that formed a 9-kilometer
parcour through both villages, their surrounding fields and nature.

Nine text-panels in public space convey the stories of the residents of Suderwick and Dinxperlo on the subject of borders. As this is an old European border, loaded with the history of severe conflicts, it is an instructive example of how and when social dynamics eventually changed. In order to bring the local audiences to further reflect and contemplate on their divisions and commons, working with several groups and citizens initiatives, we designed the project as an exhibition in public space that could be experienced through both a bicycle tour and a walk. The exhibition addresses the population of both villages as well as visitors (tourists). Each text panel is a text collage in which the voices of several persons, Germans and Dutch, are to be recognized and heard. The texts flow from German to Dutch and back, playing with language alternations, as sometimes what we expect to be a German story has been written in Dutch and v.v.

The stories gave an insight into the life around, on and beyond the border nowadays as well as in the past. The focus is on national and confessional/religious divisions and on dealing with the past in relation to these divisions and World War II. Other focal points were rural life, relationships with nature, plants and animals as well as the role of women in the society.

The selection of nine locations where the text panels are still displayed (as of 2020) was made in collaboration with the above-mentioned associations and citizen initiatives. In 2016, a mixed citizens' initiative from both German and Dutch sides successfully lobbied for the project to be permanently featured in the curriculum of the local bilingual school. The two local citizens’ associations have taken care to extend the permits.

In Suderwick, Germany, and Dinxperlo, Netherlands, the national frontier runs along one edge of the road. At one spot on this road, there are two assisted living and care facilities for the elderly, the chronically ill and the disabled, one on either side. The two institution are connected through a pedestrian overpass, which is home to a tavern with coffee and cake, hovering over the road and thus over the border. On this very site, I was able to conduct extensive interviews with over 20 elderly people. I kept asking the same questions, always about customs and habits that no longer exist. But the answers of my interviewees were always about the border. I met nice, friendly people with long life experiences and talked to them about wartimes, post-war times, about their great-grandparents' times and about the future of their grandchildren. But again, and again they spoke about the border, in one way or another, no matter what questions were asked. In Suderwick / Dinxperlo the border is much more important than any other topic. Stories of the border insist on being told. The border itself is gone today. Officially it does not exist anymore, and yet its absence can be felt. Many still say, however, that there are still too many borders in people's minds.

For an outsider, the parallels between the history of Europe in the 17th century and that of the 20th century are clearly and impressively mingled in these two villages. Religious confessions. Wars. War. Locally, I have had the honor of meeting several people who have done long-term cross-border and cross-confessional work with passion, often on an in-house and volunteer basis. Predominantly from the generation that still has every day vivid memories of the Second World War or its effects. So, it could become a life’s mission to teach Dutch in a village school, to give just one example. If a pastor in a place like this says that for Christians there can be no foreigners, it has a different kind of credibility. The exemplary nature of this very region was recognized 40 years ago with the founding of Euregio, the first cross-border local/regional administration. And today we are living in a time when, as Europe, we welcome (or we do not!) African refugees on our borders. With this in mind, perhaps the somewhat outdated border in Dinxperlo / Suderwick could or should be built up and turned into a location for instructive encounter and reflection.

With the intention of extending the project in this direction, I transformed the informative discussions I held with project contributors on the site into short texts and statements. Thus, nine text panels were created, displayed at nine locations in Dinxperlo / Suderwick.
Nine text panels, nine text collages, invite all those interested to explore the boundaries of the communities, the surrounding landscape, their history and their future, based on the narratives of the inhabitants. Everybody is cordially invited to a content-rich walk or bicycle tour around Dinxperlo and Suderwick.

Address by Werner Brand, Suderwick, 1. president of the binational citizens’ initiative Dinxperwick

When I came to Suderwick for the first time in 1982, the border was still there and customs officers at both ends of the village carried out their checks, especially of cars with foreign license plates. The woman later to be my wife and I came to Suderwick almost every weekend from Bonn (BN) or the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis (SU) and had to undergo vigorous customs controls when we drove to Dinxperlo to shop.

After 1990, our generation witnessed the border being dismantled and the customs officers transferred to the East German border. From narratives collected in this project, we know that previous generations have had other border experiences. If one takes as examples the time before the First World War or before the French Revolution, one gets a completely different picture, which is reflected in the family stories of the Suderwicker peasant families. At that time the confessional division was far more significant than the national border. In the past two generations, much work has been done to make the external border disappear, but the boundaries in the mind still need to be worked on. We can hope that this art project will contribute to this by encouraging cross-border and intergenerational discussions: what can we do in the next two generations to use the confessional, national and other differences to enhance our lives? In order not to hamper our twin villages on the border, but to enrich and promote them?

So this project could contribute in its way to making Dinxperwick a European workshop, if on a small scale. Whether it can then emerge as a beautiful flower as a Euregio or European school in Dinxperwick, that must show the future. Dreams are not only allowed in art ...

Commentary by Verena Winter van Reeken & Joop van Reeken, GrenzBlickAtelier, www.grenz-blick.eu

The art project GRENZE / GRENS by Kristina Leko is a cross-border venture in many ways, as it not only connects two villages (Suderwick and Dinxperlo) and two countries (Germany and the Netherlands), but also past and present. Memories become readable for the visitor of the text panels and thus experienceable. Out of the static text a dynamic picture is developed in the reader. The past transcends the virtual border of time and moves into the present, where it experiences a new liveliness. The stories of the people living in this moment touch the heart - and thus become a magical means that may be able to conjure away the limits in the minds. Here art has a special closeness and also openness - and it becomes portable. The memories of the narrators turn into the new memories of the readers or art-observers. There is no ending to the memory chain.
The GrenzBlickAtelier is pleased that this special cross-border art project will find a home here in Suderwick and Dinxperlo at least for a while. We would like to remind you of the Japanese proverb: "If you raise your eyes, you can see no boundaries". If the observer casts a glance over the texts of the memories, he or she will no longer see the border, because memories mingle with memories.

Commentary by Hildegard Schouwenburg, Chair of the Grenslandmuseums Dinxperlo/NL, www.grenslandmuseum.nl

The Hellweg or de Heelweg? The Grensland Museum shows the history of the two border communities Suderwick, Germany and Dinxperlo, Netherlands, separated by the Hellweg. Today hardly anyone knows what happened in the course of history. I think it makes sense to confront younger people with this story. In this way, they can incorporate and consider what has happened in the past into their current deliberations and better understand the objections of the older generation. The illustrated panels with the stories of the older generation help the younger generation to understand the story better, leading to improved understanding between young and old.

Everyone would have to wonder how a situation such as there is in Suderwick came into being. Suderwick was originally part of the Dutch community of Dinxperlo. After the Reformation and the associated peace of Münster, the border was redrawn. The part called Suderwick today (Zuider wijk, southern settlement) came to Germany. There were difficulties whenever war broke out. During the First World War, Dinxperlo, wanting to be neutral, left the road, which was used by both Germans and Dutch, to the Germans. This road, the Hellweg, is a main motor route from Westphalia to the Rhineland and back again. A barbed wire fence was erected against today's Dutch sidewalk because of the Dutch wish to remain neutral. During World War II, German soldiers erected the fence against today's German sidewalk. The residents of Suderwick had to endure this situation for 10 years. Since this road was very clear, it was possible, if no customs officers were in sight, to crawl through the barbed wire obstruction to visit relatives or to smuggle from the Dutch side what was not available in Germany. If you want to know more border stories from this period, you can do so by visiting the Grenslandmuseum in Dinxperlo.

Commentary by Johannes Hoven, Heimatverein Suderwick e.V.
www.heimatvereinsuderwick.de

To start with, Kristina Leko's art project brings local history to people from Suderwick and Dinxperlo. And visitors who like to come to the curiously running national border are also reminded of the "olde Tieden" (old times). Along the way, you will learn about what is possible in Europe today and what needs to be worked on. Without the border, the two villages of Suderwick and Dinxperlo would be quite insignificant. Any attention paid to harmonious border towns is inevitably linked to the European idea and is an incentive to staying active across borders.

Kristina Leko intelligently sorts out simple narratives about life on the border, as the residents there felt. She impressively makes their stories, thoughts and feelings visible and tangible. The project complements the existing monuments, the Grensland Museum and other memorabilia of old, long-forgotten times. This is a great opportunity to engage in a varied and interesting search for the past that is either not or only rarely found in history books. At the same time, one can experience how people live the European idea in harmony next to one another. I hope that many people will start to recall and remember. But they should also meet each other. May many old and young Dutch and Germans get into conversation and get to know each other better. I am convinced that they do not only speak in the past tense. Experiences from history can help the present and above all the future in the house of Europe to enjoy excellent coexistence.

A personal note. I notice that many memories and descriptions are similar. They inspired me to wonder if I would have different memories or become a different person if my cradle had been in Dinxperlo instead of Suderwick. Even such thoughts can produce art. May the project induce everyone to feel European.

A Commentary by Freek Diersen, Dinxperlo, Chairman of the International Advisory Committee of the municipality

Silence speaks: From my image and experience of the border to now, there is a world of difference. When I think back to the time when I was 10 years old (1956), I am still thinking of strongly separated countries; separated peoples; separated cultures; separate regulations here in Dinxperlo-Suderwick. All this was visible through two barriers and the piece of no man's land in between. People in uniforms moving around and looking after me like a boy of 10 years, giving an "unheimisch" desire to get away as quickly as possible. My parents could not relieve me of this feeling, because of the necessity of visits to a health practitioner (and there were a lot of good ones on the German side). What kind of an obstacle was the border then?! Not for smugglers?
How different the experience is now, what a good feeling it is the tangible physical obstacles are no longer there. That precisely cross-border encounters are based on understanding, distancing, on the added value of, for, and among people. To build bridges and to become "European". In my encounters with citizens on both sides of the border, I get the idea of a shared sense of experience. Of what it was, it is, and what is still to come. The memory, the meeting does one good and provides an impetus for an even better experience. That is heart-warming and makes you stop for a moment to let it get through to you. It is also beautiful that artists are also being constantly inspired by secretive nature of the border. In their "visual way" they stop for a moment to let this speak for us. The Van-Mens-tot-Mens bridge is also a good example of this, but several other silent witnesses also speak this "European language" here on the border in Dinxperwick (fd.). The very different art project of Kristina Leko with text art panels in the village and landscape is another valuable contribution and clearly has its "Grenswerte" (border related values). Let text, images and feelings arise from what a border had and still has ... and then gradually learn:

yesterday is history,

tomorrow is a secret,

today is a gift!

A good experience!

PUBLIC SPACE PROJECTS

GRENZE/GRENSSuderwick / Donxperlo, 2014RELATED:

Commentaries by project protagonists and supporters >>>

Commentary by Hildegard
Schouwenburg, Chair of the Grenslandmuseums Dinxperlo/NL,
www.grenslandmuseum.nl

If you want to know more border stories from this period, you can do so by visiting the Grenslandmuseum in Dinxperlo.Commentary by Johannes Hoven, Heimatverein Suderwick e.V. www.heimatvereinsuderwick.deTo start with, Kristina Leko's art project brings local history to people from Suderwick and Dinxperlo.

A Commentary by Freek
Diersen, Dinxperlo, Chairman of the International Advisory Committee of the
municipalitySilence speaks: From my image and experience of the border to now, there is a world of difference.

YOUTH GOVERNS BRNO REVISITED 1948-2013

/ MLÁDEŽ VEDE BRNO REVISITED 1948-2013
Brno Art Open 2013

Featuring: Bára Bakošová, Martina
Jetmarová, Lukáš Likavčan, Josef Patočka, Margita Rácová, and Tereza Vávrová.

	A project with/about young community
activists of Brno at the point in time 2013 with the objective of reflecting critically
upon the historical event “Mládež vede Brno” from 1949, during which the youth
took over all the essential functions in the city for the period of three days.
It was an event-format that later on spread throughout the country securing the
political power of the communist party. Our project was to reenact that
historical event in a small scale. However, it was partially censored by the
municipal authorities while being accused of spreading communist ideology. The
intervention was banned from the city center.

For three days in May 1949 almost 20,000
young people took part in the event “Mládež vede Brno” organized by the newly
established communist authorities. Young people took over the production,
services and administration in 82 companies in the city of Brno. The objective
of the event was to gain the sympathy of the youngsters but also of the general
population for the new regime. The event was considered a pure success, was subsequently
organized in other cities, and helped secure the rule of the communist regime.
The organizer of the event, Otto Sling, the mayor, a highly positioned
communist, was sentenced to death later, in the intern power-struggles in 1952
but rehabilitated by the regime in 1963.

The objective of our project MLÁDEŽ vede
Brno REVISITED 1948-2013 was to reflect critically upon that historical event.
Additionally, we wanted to see what was in the minds of young community
activists today. We wanted to give them a chance to be placed in the companies
or institutions of their interest, and see what they might come up with. Our
project featured six young activists interested in public education, ecology,
social housing, problems of the Roma minority, and charity projects.
Our project attracted special attention
from the city commission responsible for the Brno Art Open 2013 exhibition.
Several members of the city commission wanted to cancel our project, labeling
it as a communist propaganda. At two special meetings, at which the artist,
Kristina Leko, the project curator, Michal Koleček, as well as the director of Arthouse
Brno, Terezie Petišková, argued for freedom of speech and expression, the
project was accepted on condition some
alterations were made. However, the
project did not get support from the city administration, which failed to
organize the two placements in the city administration offices that we had
expected. Thus, one of the important issues that we discussed within the
project was the issue of the younger generation being given trust and the right
to freely reflect on the historical heritage.
Through the course of our project the
generation gap started to be revealed, as was the significant trauma of the
communist regime. On the other hand, the placements of our project participants
in several private companies showed how different the current Czech civil
society was in comparison to 1949. Paradoxically, the private sector showed
much more social responsibility than the city administration, by being more open
to hosting our participants, community activists, and learning about their
ideas.

Within the project we documented the
placements online on our blog, i.e. on six different blogs, we met and
discussed the placements within the team on a regular basis, we organized meetings
and discussions in order to resist the pressure from the city administration. Finally,
a get-together with a larger group of young activists was organized in the
House of Arts Brno, where in an extensive discussion the project’s flow and the
resistance to it were reflected. On that occasion the participants voted on the
most appropriate slogan to be put up in public space to conclude and document
the project. The winner was LOKALNI JE GLOBALNI – local is global. In the final
action of the project, we placed our graffiti in the public space. It is probably
needless to mention that the city administration did not allot us a central but
a rather remote location for our intervention, far away from the city center
and any attention. At the time, they did not even know which slogan we were
about to paint on the allotted wall.

NO MONUMENTS FOR LABOR AND IMMIGRATION was a
multifaceted interdisciplinary artistic and research project based in the
Annenviertel neighborhood of Graz in the period 2011-2013. It focused on the spatial
overlapping of the local labor history with the history of migrations. A collaborative-participatory
field and historical research on sites related to the labor movement,
encounters and social gatherings on those sites, and a production of related
texts, all culminated in a series of eight text-based interventions in public
space. Several institutions and over forty individuals contributed to the
project, inaugurated on May 1st, 2013 by the means of an alternative May Day rally.
The project is still on view in public space (January 2021).

NO MONUMENTS … was initiated in 2010 by artist Kristina Leko as a further development of her “Missing Monuments” project commissioned by the Institute Art in Public Space Styria in 2006, with the wish to tackle the obvious underrepresentation of migrant and working-class perspectives in the local public discourse. Located in the Annenviertel neighborhood, the Rotor Center for Contemporary Art was the institutional carrier and promotor or the project as well as a venue for diverse project activities. Although conceived and realized as a temporary 2-year intervention, six out of eight project locations are still in function while one of them has been included in a mainstream tourist city tour for several years. Based on the interest of different parties (schools, citizens’ groups, organizations) Rotor Center files renewal for project permit every 2 years; Rotor also offers guided tours on the project sites.

In 2011 two historians, Dr. Leo Kühberger and Joachim Heinzel, were commissioned
to carry out a historical research in Annenviertel, a working class vibrant migrant area of Graz, and to research and describe 18 locations of particular relevance to the labor movement history as well as to the history of migrations. One example is the Pastergasse, a street where a community of Italian migrants (construction workers) dwelled in the 16th century, while to be found on the spot today is a city-owned social housing project mostly populated by people with migrant background. Another example is the Idlhofgasse 36, which was the headquarters of the first anarchist organization in Styria back in the 1920s. The very same rooms have been home to the Kurdistan Information Centre since 2003.

On a weekend in October 2011 this historical research was presented in the form of a two-day sightseeing walk to a group of students of the Institute for Cultural Anthropology, Karl Franzens University in Graz. The event was part of the seminar “No History – No Monuments, visual ethnography and representational critique in art and cultural anthropology”, a collaborative university seminar by cultural anthropologist Dr. Judith Laister and artist Kristina Leko. Whereas Laister gave theoretical input, Leko undertook field research with students, and mediated her knowledge and skills related to biographical field research. (Since 1999 Leko has been artistically involved in biographical research in different social contexts.) Conversely, the research done within the seminar was transformed into an artistic project in public space.

Working in small groups and individually, the students researched and edited the biographies of people with migrant backgrounds who live or work at the historical sites mentioned above. One of the goals of the seminar “No History – No Monuments” was to produce encounters and exchanges between the students and the residents of the neighborhood. The other goal was to empower the project participants, migrant residents, by involving them in a cultural project with considerable visibility in public space. Nineteen students took part in the project, and over twenty biographical texts were written. In the next phase, a choice of historical and biographical texts created in the project was made. These texts were then shortened and transformed into text-based artworks. Each text was created through the participation and involvement of several individuals, where all the involved parties edited the text: individual field researchers, sometimes several researchers for one biography, their interview partners - people whose biographies were the subject of interest and research, several members of project team, historians involved in the project.

The final result of the project NO MONUMENTS FOR LABOUR AND IMMIGRATION counted eight interventions in public space. At each location, two text panels designed as school blackboards appear applied on the building facades. At each location, one text tells a story from the history of the Austrian labor movement while the other narrates biographies of the migrant citizens related to the location. The audience is invited to correlate the two texts, the two panels. The project as a whole is a statement about relationship of migration/s to the labor movement and its history.

The opening of the project took the form of a guided tour and a performative May Day rally, a happening with megaphones and banners, on May 1st, 2013. The members of the audience took part by reading laud selected text-passages at different sites during the tour. Over 200 people participated.

Conceptualized to be a socially and politically functional artwork, this project had a mediation program brought along the interventions in public space. In the period 2013 until 2015 the Rotor Centre for Contemporary Art offered regular guided tours through the project and the neighborhood in order to spread knowledge about the local history of labor and migration, and to promote the main thought of the project, that migration indeed has always been part of the Austrian labor history. A guided tour involving project sites is still available at Rotor upon request.

KATTENBURGER TRIUMPHAL ARCH /

A community
memorial documenting the 20th century history of a working-class neighborhood
in the center of Amsterdam: cold war, labor struggles, anti-gentrification
struggle, low-rents movement. The project was realized in collaboration with
the Kattenburger residents, who told and hand wrote the history of their island
of the last 60 years. Originally, in its first design, the Kattenburger Triumphal Arch was approved as
a monumental free-standing arch. Based on a complaint for its political contents
from the side of a conservative highly positioned politician, the project was censored,
the approval and the allocated funds withdrawn. However, the community members
engaged in the project’s writing workshop found their way to put this community
memorial in place as a permanent intervention applied on the existing
architecture.

This project evolves around the idea to
create a community memorial honoring the living residents of
Kattenburg Island in
Amsterdam along their social and community
engagement for which they had a long reputation. The project was produced in close
collaboration with the local community. That way, the intervention in public and
social space, the creation and placing of the community memorial was to
a good extend carried out by the very same individuals to whom it has been
dedicated. The memorial features stories written by the community members,
their personal histories and memories of important developments in the neighborhood
reaching back to 1940s.

Kattenburg Island is a well-organized working-class community in the heart of Amsterdam in which several generations of large and well-known families have been
living for well over two centuries. The Kattenburgers are regarded as very
special people and are known for their independent spirit and social activism.
Kattenburg’s more recent history is marked by social and community initiatives
that include the working-class community fighting to remain living on the
island after its complete reconstruction in the 1960s, an initiative that grew
into a movement to lower rents in the 1970s, and a famous fight to uproot
criminal activities in the neighborhood. Trade union activism on the island was
also historically important, and some important figures in the history of the
Dutch labor movement were from Kattenburg.

The memorial documents the social engagement of chosen individuals as
well as the social activities and collective initiatives by the citizens of
Kattenburg throughout the last part of the 20th century. It honors
the people and the ideas related to these initiatives.

Initial contacts with Kattenburg residents in 2007 mediated through the
local communal cultural center were successful, and the idea of setting up a
community memorial dedicated to the social initiatives and their activists generated
enthusiastic feedback. That said, the focal point of the project was the
creative and active involvement of individual citizens in shaping of their
everyday environment.

In April and May 2008, a 5-week long project workshop took place in the
neighborhood. A leaflet was placed in every mailbox on the island inviting
Kattenburgers to write out their own history. Twenty-five individuals took part
in the project. Some came with the texts already written, some wrote their
texts during the workshop, while others dictated their stories and thoughts.
All the texts were proofread, and then the authors handwrote their texts in ink
or pencil on paper. The handwritten texts were then applied to ceramic tiles
covering 6 columns (12 surfaces) of an enclosed passage in the most prominent
part of the neighborhood.

Most of our participants were in their sixties and seventies and were
quite active in the activities related to the lower-rent movement and other
communal actions in the 1970s, 1980s and to some extent the 1990s. The
collection of texts comprises stories and reports about different events and
actions, memories of certain periods of time (pre-war, war, post-war,
childhood, the island before the renovation, moving back to Kattenburg after
the reconstruction and so on), and portraits of individuals (stories about mothers,
fathers, community activist Marie Altelaar and union activist Jaap Altelaar). While
most of the texts and stories relate to the lower-rent movement, other
important communal actions were also recorded and described as well.
Participants also noted their thoughts about social and political activism and
community living, philosophical views about society and community, family and
friendship, and solidarity and social justice.

However, the most dramatic part of the project was its cancellation, and
everything that followed, which all brought the project to another level. The original
proposal for the Kattenburger
Triumphal Arch was namely a site-specific freestanding
arch, monumental in its dimensions, which previously received all necessary approvals
from the city authorities. However, days after being approved, project
was suddenly cancelled, based on a politician’s veto, which was not
really transparently communicated from the side of the authorities. It took some
time before the community organized itself and started lobbying for the
project. In the process that took almost two years, several engaged project’s
participants, together with the curatorial team, managed to find funds and way to
put the project in place after all, boosting their community activist spirit,
which was the very reason to start the project in the first place. More about
this process can be read in the evaluation written by Leon Tan on the website
of the Institute for Public Art. (see link below)

THE BERBERS

Open market Naschmarkt, Vienna, Wiener Festwochen, 2010

With the participation of the Berber Family

This
intervention at Vienna’s famous open-air
market recounted a history of a Greek family and their market stall. For half a year the stall of the Berber
family was covered with stories handwritten on blackboards. These, narrated by
the family members themselves, depicted the family’s daily life against its changing
social and political backgrounds over the period of 50 years. The work paid
tribute to migrants’ contributions to
the Viennese everyday culture. It attracted audiences of the Wiener Festwochen,
and invited them to read, buy and and interact.

Read MoreThe Berber Family has been running their stall at Vienna’s best known open-air market, the Naschmarkt, since 1969. These days they sell first-rate fruit and vegetables sourced from all over Europe and the world, while at one time they sold imported Greek and Turkish provisions, along with homemade specialties produced by the mother of the family.
The Berbers’ roots go back to a Greek island off the coast of Turkey that was depopulated during the 20th century due to the Greek-Turkish war and the severe political problems that followed. The Berbers, like many other Greek families from the island, became political refugees during the crisis of the 1960s, which is how they ended up in Vienna.
The Berber family occupies a special place in the history of the Naschmarkt and in the history of Viennese cuisine in general. In early 1970, the father of the family, together with two Austrian partners, friends of his, organized the first imports of olives, olive oil and feta cheese to Vienna. He is now retired, spending most of his time back on the island, while his sons are now running the stall.

The artistic intervention linked buyers and visitors to the market through stories and memories recounted by the family members: recollections about their stall, their family life, their past and future, and about the market itself. Through hand-written texts, photographs and single channel video, the stall was temporarily transformed into a tribute to the contribution of foreign workers (Gastarbeiter) to the Viennese table and Austrian society in general while vividly commemorating the family’s own particular history within the wider context of migration.
The intervention was produced as part of the Wiener Festwochen festival and was on view from June to October 2010.

THE WAY PEOPLE LIVE / KAKO ŽIVI NAROD

Public Reading/Performance
Maksimir Park, Zagreb February 14th, 2010

On Sunday, February 14, 2010 at noon in Zagreb’s Maksimir Park, Kristina Leko read excerpts from the book “The Way People Live – Life in Passive (Undeveloped) Regions” written by Rudolf Bićanić in 1936. The intention was to highlight parallels between the present-day socioeconomics and those from some 80 years ago when Croatian peasantry was indebted to such an extent that a moratorium on their debts had to be enforced in 1929.

While the air temperature hovered at -12°C, the reading lasted for 70 minutes, and I went through three book-chapters dedicated to the regional finances and banking in the 1920s and 1930s: “Peasants’ loans and debts”, "Trade and bank loans" and "Peasants on debt relief and regulation of peasant loans". The reading attracted some invited but mostly accidental audiences. Back then, in 2010 and some years prior, rumors were going around about people burdened with debts committing suicide. Starting in 2004 foreign banks defrauded and indebted 100.000 Croatian households with so called Swiss franc mortgages, which were ruled as illegitimate and illegal by the Court of Justice of the European Union in 2019 as they were built upon currency speculation. The same fraud took place systematically in all Eastern European and Balkan countries.

Rudolf Bićanić (1905-1968) was a Croatian economist, demographer, economic historian, rural sociologist, politician and university professor. His above-mentioned groundbreaking study helped establish social sciences in the South Slavic region. For his progressive thinking and critical writings on the national economy, he was imprisoned from 1933 until the end of 1936. After being released, he traveled researching throughout the passive (undeveloped) regions of the Croatian and Bosnian highlands and created a very detailed record of local socioeconomics. Bićanić believed that simple people themselves were able to trace causes and roots of their misery as well as to envision solutions for their problems, and therefore outlined several concepts for national and regional economic programs. One of them, related to the peasants’ clothing and similar to Mahatma Gandhi’s khadi, was directed against imports of low-quality textile from western European countries flooding local markets as a profitable replacement for high-quality wool exported to the same countries. Bićanić had been politically instrumental in assisting peasants in their self-organizing for decades which then influenced his sociopolitical views. His work feeds into a legacy of demystification of economic theories.

Just several days before the outbreak of the 2008 financial crisis, I happened to stage my first public reading of Bićanić’s texts, which was triggered and inspired by rumors and reports of suicides committed by small entrepreneurs. Aside from the book-chapters related to loans and debts, I also read the chapters: “The question of the peasant dress”, and “The peasant dress from the point of view of the national economy”.
